Mister Donut Awakening
After twenty non-stop days of walking, a day off! What do we do? We walk.
The boisterous little bird outside our hotel window last night sang his heart out for no rain and he succeeded. We spent a dry morning exploring Nakamura town and running errands to the Hyaku En Shoppu (Japan’s Dollar Store) for socks and band-aides, a Yūbinkyoku (post office) to mail home unused gear, lunch at a local ramen shop, and a humbling visit to Mister Donut.
While enjoying our jelly filled pastry and coffee, we took out my camera to look at that “wind” footage I’ve been working on for weeks.
Wow. What an eye opener. It sucks!
The footage is way too shaky. What was I thinking? Certainly good, but overly ambitious intentions. Perhaps my vision saw an award winning short film, skillfully shot and edited, that would surely be the admiration of millions. Well, let it be know that this scenario does not happen filming on a mono-pod, carrying a 25 pound backpack, in winds that take you sideways, and with the same angles for almost every scene. The scenario that did happen is that it gave us both a good laugh as we scrolled shot after shaky shot. What a wonderful lesson in humility and modesty.
This April, now four years after the Mister Donut awakening, that Shikoku video was completed. Although not my original idea of “wind,” it is instead a nostalgic reminder of the time in 2016 while eating fried dough, lessons about intention and patience were learned.
